Louisville Hosts National Conference for Middle School Educators This Week

Actor and author Henry Winkler is a keynote speaker at this week’s National Conference for Middle School Educators in Louisville.Winkler will be joined by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday.Winkler has written several children’s books about a child with dyslexia and he plans on addressing his own struggle with the disorder, which was diagnosed late in his life.“I was told I would never achieve. And I went from never achieving to having the most wonderful time doing what I’ve dreamt of doing, then with my partner authoring 19 novels,” said Winkler.Around 5,000 educators are expected to pack into the Kentucky International Convention Center over the three day conference. It offers hundreds of sessions that help educators develop strategies and goals in the classroom. Topics like cyber bullying and common core standards are popular this year. Winkler will offer inspiration to attendees and discuss how students all have gifts to share.“I talk about, if I can do it, anybody can do it. And it’s based on a phrase that was first spoken in 1946. If you will it, it is not a dream,” Winkler said. The conference begins on Thursday.
