McConnell-Lunsford Race Gets Closer

The high turnout expected for the Presidential race this November could play a major role in deciding Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race.Recent polls show Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford gaining on incumbent Republican Mitch McConnell. Al Cross is the director of the Institute for Rural Journalism at the University of Kentucky. He says Democrats outnumber Republicans in Kentucky, and Lunsford’s success hinges on getting Democrats to the polls. But, that could be a challenge.“We have a unique situation here that’s never been presented before," he says. "We’ve never had an African-American candidate, never had somebody for whom 20 percent of the Democratic electorate would probably disqualify him because of his race.”Republican John McCain is expected to carry Kentucky in the presidential race. Cross says McCain’s history of disagreeing with McConnell might also hurt McConnell’s standing with moderate Republicans.
