New Albany Mayor Doug England has vetoed a comprehensive smoking ban that was passed last month by the city council. In a press conference Tuesday morning, England said he would only support a ban that exempts private clubs and bars. Before sending it back to the city council, England proposed several amendments to the bill that would allow such exclusions. The ban passed the council with a 5-4 vote last month. Councilman Dan Coffey says the mayor’s amendments would have been more helpful before that final vote.“We’ve tried and tried and tried to work this mayor, but yet he chooses not to. We would’ve loved to have his input on this.”The council can override the veto with a 6-3 vote. Coffey says he’s not sure if the council will consider the amendments.
