There's a new album of cover tunes to benefit Teach For America, a national program that places talented recent college graduates in under-resourced public schools across the country for two years. The mission of the program is to build a movement to eliminate educational inequity so that all children are afforded the opportunity to receive a quality education. One of the program's proponents, Brett Shepherd, is a fellow who lives in Louisville and sent me a copy of this CD for my daily feature The Five O'Clock Shadow which is an original followed by a cover tune. Having to come up with a cover tune every single weekday is not an easy task and I'm often scrambling to find not only a cover tune to feature that day but the original song too, and on top of that, an interesting version of the song, hopefully. Brett's CD has been a Godsend! Great cover tunes of many beloved songs are on this compilation called Before The Goldrush (The Covers Project) to benefit Teach For America which is only available as a digital release. If you click on the link above you can listen to the songs or download them and all proceeds benefit this great organization. Of special interest is the fact that it was produced by a former program director of WAKY radio from the 1970's named Gary Guthrie. I was a huge fan of that Louisville radio station back in the day! Apparently, his daughter was a TFA corps member and this inspired him to put this album together. Listen for some great future 5 0'Clock Shadows on 91.9 in the coming weeks thanks to these two great Louisvillians!
