The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly poised to file a lawsuit to block the proposed merger of insurance giants Aetna and Louisville-based Humana.
Bloomberg reports that a final decision on whether to sue to block that deal, along with Anthem’s proposed takeover of Cigna, could come this week or next.
A source says anti-trust officials are concerned that the deals would reduce competition.
The mergers would reduce the insurance industry’s five largest companies to three entities.
The report says it’s possible that the companies might try to prevent the suits by selling off some assets.
An Aetna spokesman tells Bloomberg that his company and Humana believe their proposed $37 billion merger would benefit both consumers and the industry as a whole.
