Open Enrollment for Kentucky's Health Exchange Starts Saturday

The second round of open enrollment for Kentucky’s health insurance exchange begins Saturday.

At a news conference on Monday, Gov. Steve Beshear said improvements have been made to theKynectwebsite and more people have been hired to answer questions and help process applications.

Some 521,000 Kentuckians signed up for coverage during the first enrollment window. Beshear said there are many more Kentuckians who don’t have coverage, including those who don’t think they need it.

The exchange, called Kynect, was established under the federal Affordable Care Act. He said some people won’t enroll because they associate the program with President Obama—and that they should reconsider.

"Because it’s not about him, it’s not about me, it’s about you," Beshear said. "It’s about your family, it’s about your kids. So, just do me a favor—either go online or go to an insurance agent, call the hotline and see what you just might be entitled to."

Beshear said people who signed up for coverage during the first open enrollment period should keep shopping on the exchange, as there’s now more competition and possibly a better deal available. He acknowledged, though, that some insurers may file higher rates for the coming year.
