STATE OF AFFAIRS 11/30/10: Opioids are a class of drugs derived from the poppy seed, or their synthetic equivalents. They are an important tool in the medical treatment of pain because of their analgesic effect on the body, but their side effects - euphoria and sedation - make them prime targets for abuse. This Tuesday we'll learn about about the opioid drug class, why they are so addictive, and how these addictions are treated.
