Funding has been announced for some enhancements at the University of Louisville's Freedom Park between Second and Third Streets.State officials announced Monday that U of L will get $1.6 million in federal transportation funds for the project. The U of L Foundation will provide more than $400,000 in matching funds.Freedom Park is a triangle of land just north of a Confederate Monument erected more than a century ago.The improvements will include a new pedestrian crosswalk, landscaping and an educational display highlighting Kentucky's role in the evolution of civil rights.               U of L College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Blaine Hudson accepted the funds on the school's behalf."An interpretive center with signage and public art will provide the counterbalance to the Confederate Monument that is so important to our diverse student body.   There is great deal of the story that has never been told," Hudson said. The civil rights exhibit will include a sculpture created by local artist Ed Hamilton.
