Presentation Academy Begins Expansion

Louisville's oldest continuously operating high school has embarked on a major expansion project.Ground was broken Monday for Presentation Academy's $5 million Arts and Athletic Center, which will be located across the street from the girls' Catholic school at Fourth and Breckinridge in downtown Louisville. It's the first major construction at Presentation since 1948. The school nearly closed down in 1995 due to mounting debt and plummeting enrollment.Academy President Sister Christine Beckett says the new facility should be ready for use by the 2009-2010 school year."Presentation is making her statement today that she is here to stay. She is here to stay downtown," Beckett said.Presentation Academy was founded in 1831 and has been at its present location since 1893.The school is launching its first-ever capital campaign to help pay for the construction.
