Ashe is done being the sad girl. Well, almost. The rising pop dynamo behind Ashlyn is back with “Another Man’s Jeans,” a track that sounds like it was plucked out of a jukebox in 1973 and crash-landed into a Tarantino flick. It’s fun, it’s flirty, it’s a little bit dangerous—and apparently, it’s just the beginning of her new era.
“I’m literally wearing the Another Man’s Jeans tank top right now,” Ashe laughs, before insisting it wasn’t planned. Sure, Ashe.
The song, with its unmistakable Stuck in the Middle with You vibes, was no accident either. “That was one million percent on purpose,” she says, owning her inner folk-rock rebel. “No one’s making music like this anymore, and I figured—I have fans now, I can probably convince them to love this.”
Convince? They’re screaming it back at her every night on tour, which is exactly why she rushed to release it. “I was like, do you guys want this song now? Let me know." Like they were going to say no.
It’s not just the song that’s dripping in 70s cool. The video is a straight-up Tarantino homage, complete with ruined 35mm film that turned into a red-tinted aesthetic accident. “We shot in Mexico, spent three days, and then the film came back ruined,” Ashe sighs. “So my manager calls and says, ‘Bad news—we can’t use it. Good news—you’re going back to Mexico.’” The ruined footage is in the final cut, and somehow, it’s perfect. “It looks like it was on goddamn purpose, but it sure wasn’t.”
The video ends with Ashe at the beach, a suitcase in hand, and apparently that’s just chapter one. “It’s just the beginning,” she teases. “There’s more coming.” And if those other versions of her in the video looked like they wanted to rough her up a bit? “Oh yeah. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna get beat up in one of the next videos. That’s gonna be the most fun I’ve ever had on set.”
She’s not kidding when she says this new phase is all about having fun. “I’ve never felt more confident, never felt sexier, or more alive,” Ashe says. “I’m done with the sad girl music. This is take-it-or-leave-it energy now.” And yeah, she’s talking to you, exes.
But don’t expect a full pivot. “Another Man’s Jeans is just a hint,” she says. The next single is a total curveball. “It’s called ‘Hope You’re Not Happy.’ Couldn’t be more different.”
Still, it’s not all sass and swagger. Her setlist’s a roller coaster, and songs like “Always” hit hard every night. “I tear up every show,” Ashe admits. “I’m gonna take it out of the set eventually... but being vulnerable is good, right?”
Even her ex-boyfriend showed up—her first boyfriend, Taylor. “He came with his wife,” she laughs. “I sang the song I wrote about him. It was weird. And kind of amazing.”
She’s not ditching her past—Ashlyn still looms large—but she’s moving forward. “That was a snapshot of post-divorce, losing my brother, growing up,” she says. “Now I’m in a new season. This music is fun. It’s alive.”
And she’s not taking advice from anyone but herself. “We’re all just throwing shit at the wall, hoping it sticks,” Ashe shrugs. “No one knows the right answer for your career—except maybe you.”
At this rate, she’s probably right.
