IN WHICH a certain BBC television program is celebrated, and a television program from the States is used as a jumping-off point for social drinking.
Briana's pick: The Mighty Boosh
Welcome friends, to the fantastic world of the BBC. The British Empire may no longer be the foremost global power, but they sure do make good television. My current favorite is The Mighty Boosh. First as a stage show, then a radio program, and now in its third season on TV (the live stage show continues to tour as well), the Boosh has become my obsession.
The television show first appeared in the states on Adult Swim. Meanwhile episodes were available to purchase, but you had to have a DVD player that could read Region 2 discs. But now, through the magic of global commerce, the Mighty Boosh has come to the States. In fact you can now purchase the entire box set of seasons 1 – 3 for your viewing pleasure.
More info on the show can be found here: The Mighty Boosh on the BBC
I wouldn’t, however, consider the Mighty Boosh nerdy. It’s just plain weird. But you know what IS nerdy? This Mighty Boosh vs. Star Wars video mashup (there’s also a Harry Potter version too).
James' pick: A "Big Bang Theory" drinking game
I love love love the Monday night sitcom "The Big Bang Theory." It's funny in a way that sitcoms haven't been funny in a long time.
It's also a show about nerds, and as such it draws heavily on the lore and culture – comic books, astrophysics, the Large Hadron Collider, all that good stuff. So I submit for your enjoyment, my Big Bang Theory Drinking Game:
Non-nerd version: You take a drink every time Sheldon says something funny. Warning: This is a deadly way to play the game, as the man has some of the best comedic lines anywhere on television.
Nerd version: You take a drink every time a joke is built upon some obscure nerd concept which you actually get. Take this exchange, for instance:
In this instance, if you know what Occam's Razor is, you take a drink. Because you're a nerd.
Another example:
So, you take one drink if you know who the Green Lantern is. A bonus drink if you can name the first Lantern (no, it wasn't Hal Jordan, it was Alan Scott, you silly person).
