The Clark Memorial Bridge will close at midnight on July 8 to allow for construction on the downtown crossing of the Ohio River Bridges Project.The bridge, which connects U.S. 31E between Jeffersonville and downtown Louisville (where the road becomes Second Street), will close for about six weeks as crews work on access ramps for the new downtown bridge on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, said Mindy Peterson, a spokeswoman for the downtown crossing construction project.Peterson said “nothing is changing on the bridge itself,” but the construction on the downtown crossing will be close enough to the Clark Memorial to require that traffic be kept away.An exact date for reopening the Clark Memorial Bridge has not yet been set, but officials estimate it will be sometime in mid-August.Motorists are encouraged to use the Kennedy Bridge while the Clark Memorial is closed, and pedestrians and cyclists should use the Big Four Bridge. Nearly 25,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day.TARC buses that cross the Clark Memorial will be re-routed to the Kennedy, TARC officials said. Signs will be posted at affected TARC stops prior to the bridge closure.
