Alison Lundergan Grimes leads Mitch McConnell in the 2014 Kentucky Senate Race, according to a new poll released by a pair of liberal groups.The results—compiled by Public Policy Polling—state that Grimes, Kentucky's Secretary of State, tops McConnell 45-44 among Kentucky voters.In a statement, Grimes campaign senior advisor Jonathan Hurst said: “It’s no surprise that Kentucky voters have had enough of Mitch McConnell’s partisan gridlock. For thirty years, McConnell has been the embodiment of all that is wrong with Washington and has no problem turning his back on Kentucky’s middle class.”The polling was done on behalf of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee andDemocracy for America.The margin of error was 2.8 percent and it polled 1,210 Kentucky voters. The question asked: "If the general election for U.S. Senate were held today, and the choices were Republican Mitch McConnell and Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, for whom would you vote?"The poll also said that 51 percent of Kentucky voters disapprove of McConnell's job performance.The McConnell campaign took issue with the results. In a statement, McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said: "George Soros and the Obama Allies are up to their same old tricks. They have concocted another fictitious poll that has no basis in reality, held it for ten days, and released it at the perfect time in the news cycle to help their upstart liberal candidate. This poll has zero credibility and should be ignored out of hand."A Republican poll released last week showed McConnell with aneight percentage point lead over Grimes.A Grimes news release (and a news release from Progressive Change Campaign note that PPP was cited by the Hill and others as having the 2012 elections'most reliable poll. Grimes entered the race last month. She'll face a some Democratic primary opponents, including Owensboro businessman Ed Marksberry and Louisville music promoter Bennie J. Smith. McConnell has a Republican primary challengerin Matt Bevin.Senate candidates are scheduled to speak at Saturday's Fancy Farm picnic.The 2014 general election is 460 days away.
