Noise and Notes: Bennie J. Smith's Long Shot Quest to Retire Mitch McConnell

When Louisville musician Bennie J. Smith announced he was seeking the Democratic nomination to run against Republican Senator Mitch McConnell even he compared it to a David versus Goliath proposition.A jazz musician and Danville, Ky. native, Smith is equal parts music promoter and human rights activist. He is also a proud supporter of President Obama's agenda and work on both presidential campaigns as a volunteer in 2008 and an Ohio field organizer in the 2012 election. That could make Smith's chances even harder when considering the president's poor showings in the state, and the long shot candidate says the Obama campaign didn't show up in Kentucky enough to make an impact.Right now everyone is focused on the Democrats who aren't in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race, but Smith remains confident that during that time he can build a grassroots campaign. And he has laid out a lengthy agenda nonetheless on issues such as immigration reform, gun control and felon voting rights.Smith dropped by to explain his views and what inspired him to run for U.S. Senate.
