Rep. John Yarmuth, a Democrat representing the Third District, will serve on next year’s House Budget Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee.In a statement, Yarmuth says the committee assignments will allow him to continue working on middle class issues that reflect fairness and shared responsibility.The Education and Workforce Committee oversees federal programs at all levels of education and its expected to take up legislation to rewrite the No Child Left Behind law next year.Yarmuth previously served on the education committee and helped lead the successful reauthorization of the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act. He also helped launch “Digital Promise” which is a national initiative to bring more technologies to education and job training.Yarmuth has been on the House Budget Committee the past few years.Here is the full press release sent by Yarmuth's office: Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) has been selected to serve on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the House Committee on the Budget for the 113 th Congress. The Committees are expected to address critical policy debates that will dominate Congress over the next two years, including bolstering the middle class and creating a responsible federal budget. “These committee assignments allow me to continue working to grow and strengthen the middle class through education, economic opportunity, and investment that reflects our values of fairness and shared responsibility,” Yarmuth said. “Access to a quality, affordable education, a fair and livable wage, and the prospect of a secure retirement are critical national priorities.” The Committee on Education and the Workforce oversees federal programs and initiatives dealing with education at all levels, from preschool through high school to higher education and continuing education. It is expected to take up legislation to rewrite No Child Left Behind in the new Congress. The Committee also holds jurisdiction over workforce initiatives aimed at strengthening health care, job training, and retirement security for workers. Yarmuth was also reappointed to the House Committee on the Budget, on which he has served during the 111 th and 112 th Congresses. The Budget Committee is charged with preparing the annual budget resolution, which sets spending and revenue levels. During the past two Congresses, Yarmuth has been a leading voice for a fair and responsible federal budget. Yarmuth served on the Education and Workforce Committee during the 110 th Congress, spending his first two years in office working to expand early childhood education, improve the K-12 system, and help more Americans access a high-quality college education. During Yarmuth’s time on the Committee, he led several legislative priorities, including the successful reauthorization of the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act and the enactment of Digital Promise, a national initiative to revolutionize and implement cutting-edge technologies in education and job training.
