Update 4:45 p.m.: Crews working to offload dangerous chemicals at the train derailment site in southwestern Jefferson County got a later-than-expected start Tuesday morning because of the weather, MetroSafe said.Crews finished offloading a butadiene car in the afternoon, after starting at about 11:30 a.m. -- a couple of hours later than expected, said Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for MetroSafe. The area around the derailment site was muddy, and crews had a difficult time setting up equipment, Duncan said. The crews had planned to next offload a hydrogen fluoride car, Duncan said.On Wednesday, crews planned to offload another hydrogen fluoride car, plus another car carrying a less dangerous chemical, Duncan said.An evacuation order for a half-mile radius around the derailment site near Dixie Highway and Katherine Station Road is expected to remain in effect until at least the offloading of those cars is complete, she said. Also, Dixie Highway will remain closed near the site.Earlier: Dixie Highway closed early Tuesday near the train derailment site in southwestern Jefferson County and workers have begun on the train cars to remove chemicals, according to MetroSafe. WFPL will be giving updates on the progress through the day. Here's Monday's story on the plans for Tuesday.
