Democrat Shelli Yoder is running a grassroots campaign for Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District seat against freshman Republican incumbent Todd Young. The former Miss Indiana is a first-time candidate who won a competitive five-way Democratic primary earlier this year. Since then she has been traveling across the broad souther Indiana district meeting as many constituents as possible. As usual for political novices, Yoder has struggled to keep pace with Young’s fundraising in a district that is favored to stay in the GOP column. But she’s gotten national attention and support from progressive PACs, namely former Vermont Governor Howard Dean. Thus far, however, the debate in Indiana's Ninth District race has been about how many, and where exactly the two candidates should meet to debate.I talked to Yoder about the fiscal cliff, President Obama's record and debating Congressman Young. But overall, why a person would want to run a Congress that is so unpopular.
