The Kentucky Derby Festival's Great Steamboat Race will be held this afternoon on the Ohio River, about two months later than originally scheduled. The Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati will race beginning at 6:00pm EDT. The race was originally scheduled for May 4 but was postponed due to high water on the Ohio River. The Derby Festival says the race was first held in 1963, was canceled once, in 1967, and was rescheduled in 1966 and 1983 due to high water. The Belle of Louisville's longtime opponent in the race, the Delta Queen, is now a floating hotel in Chattanooga, Tennesee after its safety exemption for overnight excursions was not renewed by Congress.
