Local NAACP Reviewing JCPS Superintendent Search Report

The head of the Louisville chapter of the NAACP says his organization is still reviewing a report on what parents and community members want from the new superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools.The firm assisting the school board in finding a new superintendent released the report Monday. It cites resolving student assignment complaints and improving underperforming schools as the top issues the public wants the new district leader to tackle.Raoul Cunningham with the NAACP says so far, he hasn't seen anything in the report that raises concerns, though nothing has stood out as exceptional, either. He says preserving diversity in schools is key, and he'll make sure the issue remains a priority as the search for a superintendent continues."I may not be at every meeting, but we will have representatives at every meeting," says Cunningham "This is a process in motion."School Board chair Steve Imhoff has said the new superintendent must support diversity through a student assignment plan. Cunningham says that's reassuring, but adds that Imhoff is only one vote on the seven-member school board that will choose a new superintendent this summer."That's reasonably assuring, but Steve Imhoff is one of seven votes."Cunningham says diversity is achieved through the student assignment plan. The plan has a number of critics, and Cunningham says the next superintendent should not be among them.
