Homestead Exemption Amnesty Period Ends

Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator Tony Lindauer says he'll begin a crackdown this week on property owners who are illegally claiming a homestead exemption. The exemption is intended to ease the tax burden on senior citizens, but Lindauer's office says some people who inherit or purchase properties from eligilble homeowners fail to have the exemption removed.Spokesperson Holly Brockman-Johnson says a nearly one-month amnesty period for violators to come forward and make good on the taxes ended Friday, and violators will now be pursued."We will use all of our software and information gathering techniques and tools to find who is misusing the homestead exemption," she said.Brockman-Johnson says nearly 300 people came forward during the amnesty period to change their exemption status.
