Pope Benedict has appointed a new bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Owensboro.Father William Medley will be ordained as the fourth bishop of the western Kentucky diocese in February. The 57 year old Medley is a familiar figure in the Louisville area, where he has been pastor of several parishes and served in other capacities. He says he's humbled by the appointment.
"Throughout my life, I have known and admired so many priests more worthy and more capable than I. But with profound trust I know that God, in time, will reveal to me and I hope to you why i have been chosen," he said during a Tuesday press conference in Owensboro. The Diocese of Owensboro has more than 51,000 members, and includes 79 parishes, 19 schools (among them Brescia University) and a hospital.Medley succeeds Bishop John McRaith, who is retiring. You can see video of Bishop-elect Medley's introduction and press conference here.(Photo courtesy of Diocese of Owensboro)
