Replicas of two ships that were part of Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage to the New World are in Louisville for a weeklong stay.
The Nina and the Pinta replicas are docked near Waterfront Park through Tuesday. The floating museums are operated by the Columbus Foundation, based in the British Virgin Islands. The Nina has been touring much of the world since 1992; the Pinta was recently constructed in Brazil.The foundation's Morgan Sanger says the vessels may appear small by modern standards, but were considered large in the late 15th century."There weren't many of them but they were trading vessels that went down the coast of Africa. Then the explorers, Columbus, Magellan and all those guys saw the value of these ships for transatlantic voyages," he said.The ships will be open for tours during their stay.
