Flood repair and damage assessment continue at the Kentucky Derby Museum, which was hard hit by last week's flash flood.
Spokesperson Wendy Treinen says parts of the museum were inundated by up to ten inches of water and sewage, but because of quick action by museum staff, only about 100 of the 10,000 pieces in its collection were damaged.But there is still extensive structural damage."We're putting the number around $4 million, that's the number that the insurance company has given us so far. We think that number potentially could rise," Treinen said.The museum will be closed indefinitely, but the gift shop has been relocated and tours of the racetrack conducted by museum staff have resumed.
The drone of drying fans can be heard throughout the museum, where carpet has been removed from the main floor and lower level. Damaged items are being packed for shipment to a conservator in Chicago.
