15 Teachers Unlikely To Return To New Albany-Floyd County Schools

Fifteen teachers likely won’t return to work when the next academic year starts in the New Albany-Floyd County School District. The teachers were notified this week of the layoffs, which district spokesperson Dave Rarick says are necessary to overcome budget cuts. The district is in line to receive several million dollars from the federal stimulus package, but Rarick says officials aren’t sure the funds could be used to rehire the laid off teachers."Our understanding is that money may be earmarked for programs and other things, not necessarily personnel," he says. "So we're waiting on clarification in terms of what that money is actually going to be used for."Rarick says several vacant positions in administration have been eliminated and will not be filled.
