The Board of Regents of the Kentucky Community and Technical College system voted Friday to eliminate tenure for new faculty members at the 16 schools in the system. The vote was 10 to 4."What that means is that after July 1, if you are hired into the system, you will be hired on a contract basis rather than a tenured basis," said board chairman Richard Bean.Bean says the new policy will give the system more flexibility when it's necessary to make curriculum and personnel changes. The move has drawn opposition from some faculty members, who say they fear it could compromise instructional quality and discourage instructors from speaking out on issues because of fear of losing their jobs. The policy change does not apply to current faculty.
