Seventeen Indiana state parks will be closed to the public and opened to hunters in the coming weeks. For the last 15 years, the state Department of Natural Resources has allowed deer hunts in various parks. Natural Resource Coordinator Mike Mycroft says the hunting helps protect native vegetation.“We have 32 state-endangered species of plants," he says. "And that’s really what these reductions are all about. It’s more about the vegetation that the deer consume.”Mycroft says the disappearance of predators such as wolves and cougars led to an overpopulation of deer. The parks, including Charlestown Park in Clark County will be opened to state-approved deer hunters Monday and Tuesday and December 1st and 2nd.
