The Crisis in Darfur

Sudan—Africa’s largest country— and the region of Darfur in particular, is experiencing a humanitarian crisis. In the civil war between Arab herders and ethnic African rebels, government-supported militias like the infamous Janjaweed have killed over 200,000 people and displaced 2.5 million more. The US considers this slash-and-burn campaign to be genocide, but international efforts to stop the violence are failing. UN and African Union peacekeeping troops are unable to protect civilians, and in spite of forecasts of an imminent wave of slaughter, China, Sudan’s favorite business partner, refuses to intervene. Join us Friday when we discuss the crisis with US activists and a Sudanese member of the Louisville community.
