Louisville, Ky. (March 27, 2017) - 91.9 WFPK Independent Louisville and the Louisville Waterfront Development Corporation are proud to announce the 15th annual launch of the region’s favorite concert series on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. The WFPK Waterfront Wednesday Concert Series is a monthly free concert on the Big Four Lawn in Louisville Waterfront Park, located next to the Big Four Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge.
The concerts take place on the final Wednesday of every month, April through September. Dates for the 2017 season are: April 26, May 31, June 28, July 26, August 30 & September 27. The Big Four Lawn “opens” at 5 pm, and the music begins promptly at 6 pm.
“We’ll introduce you to some stellar new bands this season and welcome some long-time favorites," says WFPK Program Director, Stacy Owen. "Expect a diverse group of genres; pop, rock, americana, hip-hop, punk AND an entire showcase of up and coming Louisville bands!”
The first installment of the summer series will feature Murder by Death (9:00 pm), Whitehorse (7:30 pm), and Maximon (6:00 pm).
“Murder By Death is a group not easily defined by current labels. For over 10 years, many have tried to label the band originating from Bloomington. Comprised of singer Adam Turla, bassist Matt Armstrong, cellist Sarah Balliet and drummer Dagan Thogerson, Murder By Death has tried to sidestep convoluted genres and subgenres. Some will say alt-country, some will say gothic southern rock, but singer Adam Turla likes to keep things simple. Rock and roll.”- Hybrid Magazine
Whitehorse’s brazen sonic breadth encompasses psychedelic surf, arid border rock, lo-fi ingenuity and icy 80’s sparseness. Luke Doucet’s Gretsch White Falcon and impeccable tone, combined with Melissa McClelland’s blazing vocals and badass P- Bass playing, have made the duo’s sound unmistakably, inventively ‘Whitehorse.’ Their songwriting is distinguished by its cinematic fiction, full of flawed characters, foiled plans and anti-fairy tales that transform real life into sleek, stylized collages of neo-noir drama and high-gloss.
Maximón is a band from Louisville, Kentucky, known for their lush textured dream pop and the warmth of vulnerability that shows through in their songwriting and live performances. In 2015, the band released their first single, "Flame," to consistent local radio play and set the table for their first full length album, "If Yes Do" which was released in early 2017. The band's work has been described as "a dream-pop collection of hazy layers and jagged leads that still manages to build and fall in a dramatic and compelling way."
