Does your carpet have stains that you can’t get out? Your car has an odd odor that you’ve not been able to locate? Are you lonely for the companionship of a friend? Well then, my friends, The Weekly Feed will love you, baby. And it goes like this. 1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 3…
Rain Machine – Give Blood
The funkiest track you’ve heard all year, from one of the masters reinventing the funk game. Rain Machine is the solo vessel for Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio and it oozes originality. Its exactly the something different that you needed today. Grab his disc on 9/22.
The Big Pink – Dominos
Of course, sometimes all you need is a big chorus and a catchy melody, which you’ll find pretty blatant in the debut disc A Brief History of Love. BBC named them Most Likely to Breakout in ’09, and that makes sense.
Pearl Jam – The Fixer
Full disclosure, I’m a Pearl Jam fanatic. I own all of the live show bootlegs, vinyls, tapes, you-name-it-I-got-it. With that said, I understood why people thought they missed the mark on 2006’s self-titled (Avocado) disc. But from all accounts, you should all be able to find whatever was missing from that last one here. Short, punchy, and extremely catchy songs from one of the great ones. Seriously, its okay to tell people that you like it. Its okay to be a Pearl Jam fan. In fact, there’s no better time.
Monsters of Folk – Say Please
I think I was expecting more from this super group. I mean, this is basically the new generation's Traveling Willburys, but I didn’t find a “Handle With Care” in this first single. Its okay, and has grown with continued listens, but… well, I’m hoping there is still something more striking on the full length.
Julian Plenty – Games For Days
Lets get it out of the way, Julian Plenti is really Paul Banks from Interpol. That shouldn’t be a surprise once you hear it. It sounds like Interpol. It feels like Interpol. So if Interpol does it for you, here you go. If Interpol doesn’t do it for you, no big loss, but don’t discredit this just because of the family tree. It has a few redeeming qualities and actually reminds me a bit of what The Arctic Monkeys just did with their newest disc, as far as a brooding direction.
Yo La Tengo – Here To Fall
There is A LOT of anticipation for Yo La Tengo’s new dist, Popular Songs. I mean, A LOT. And these first two internet singles (this one along with last months Periodically Double or Triple) have only set the bar higher. The band is still taking chances, even after 12 records and pulling out some amazing song craft. Be prepared - Sept. 8.
Jets Overhead – Heading For Nowhere
Listening to this track on Large Hearted Boy reminded me I have too many CD’s setting around. I must’ve had this disc for two months now and had never picked it up until running across their latest single online. Quickly downloaded, it all came together once I saw the album art in my iTunes. Anyway, you’re looking at a straight slow rocker, a little bit Kills, and little bit mainstream radio. Its really the perfect marriage. One of those songs you hear 9 years later and instantly remember the feeling of the day you heard it. No Nations is the album and it out now.
The Flaming Lips – Silver Trembling Hands
Its finally here. After hearing about this mysterious new album for what seems like an eternity, we’re finally getting some sampling in the form of a tour only EP, where you’ll find this song, one other album track, and a few exclusives. It’s the Lips at their usual playful, echo-y, thumping oddness. I wouldn’t look for this one to be the official first single, but it’s a great intro to the upcoming double album, Embryonic, that most inside their camp are calling their White Album, that drops on Sept. 29th.
Javelin – Tell Me, What Will It Be?
There have been a few great instrumental jams this summer. The ones that invoke the sun and call for some Beach Blanket Bingo. Javelin have followed suit, adding a bit of rising paranoia in the mix and giving a small guitar shout out to Aretha’s "It’s In His Kiss" for some trainspotting fun.
Free Energy – Free Energy
With all of these throwbacks to decades past that this decade has been wrought in, you may have been waiting for “the new Thin Lizzy.” No? Well, here it is anyway, and it’s a blast of AM fun. The Philly quartet wear the riffs on their sleeve and preach the party of a great night. Keep it in the car for a late night stroll through town with your besties. And crank it up.
The Dead Weather – Treat Me Like Your Mother (Diplo Remix)
What would a Feed be without some kind of remix? In the caring hands of Diplo, The Dead Weathers latest stomp gets a re-twisting that’s enough to be interesting, but not enough for repeated listens. It does happen to drop at the same time as their video for the song, a short film, is being played on Cinemax, so the marketing is up… for whatever that’s worth.
Atlas Sound – Walkabout
The shoe-gazers will have their day! This lo-fi trek through a beach Boys era dreamland has all the winning qualities of cool: It has Bradford Cox in it. It’s a duet with Noah Lennon of Panda Bear. Its got a great little repeating line that fun, sunny, and shiny. Take it or leave it. Logos is out 10/20.
Kurt Vile – Overnite Religeon
Sometimes, I don’t get it. This is one of those times. Its not that its bad, but there is A TON of banter on the webs about Vile’s new single and album, Childish Prodigy. Good for him, but it seems to me that folks are doing a little bandwagoneering on Kurt’s behalf. However, if you’re one of the lucky ones, then you probably already know to pick the full length on Oct. 6.
The Polyphonic Spree – Blurry
I’m not usually a fan of The Spree, but this new demo that lead dude Tim Delaughter has leaked out is pretty damn promising. I felt like I knew it from the first listen, but not in a generic way. I’m curious how this will translate to the full on juggernaught of the band, but at least I’ll be paying attention.
Make sure to keep those pets spayed and neutered. Bob’s not around to tell us all the time, so we gotta pick up the slack, ya know?
