Hey web-heads. We made it through another week - with as few celebrity deaths as possible. Actually, most of the surprises this week lie in the music. Spoon, without warning, dropped a bag of news that included a new EP. Thanks, Spoon! The Fleet Foxes were spotted on BBC sneaking in a new music. Christmas already? And everyone simultaneously pumped their fist to the sound of new A.A. Bondy. All wrapped up into The Weekly Feed. It's the thought that counts.
Spoon - Got Nuffin
So, as I just mentioned, Spoon gave what was probably the biggest surprise of the week. Seemingly out of nowhere, the Austin band sent a note through their website reporting that a new EP, also called Got Nuffin', would hit shelves four days later. This title track had been played at some live shows here and there, but the studio version is soooo good. Straight up Spoon, exactly how you know them and love them. No new revalations, but if you're a fan, this will keep your mouth moistened.
Noisettes - Never Forget You
This awesome soul-throwback English trio will soon be everywhere. Just a prediction. If we parallel today's new soul singers to the past, lead singer Shingai Shoniwa could be the new Gladys Knight... if Gladys were raised on Blondie. Total fun record and as good as any for the summer. Young Wild Hearts is out now.
Miike Snow - Animal (Fake Blood Remix)
Three Swedish dudes. Two of them are pop writing perfectionists. What exactly does that mean? Two of them wrote the Britney hit "Toxic" so they know how to throw down a hook. Paired with a new dude for vocals, they're taking the dance floor without even breakin' a sweat. This is the Fake Blood Remix, an up-n-coming artist in his own right, but you can grab the original on the full length now. Von Doom - The Decender
Snagged this one from Large Hearted Boy. Not a ton of info on them just yet, but its always curious to find a band from Rhode Island doing some big things. If this group had a little backing, this bouncy little ditty would probably get some good mainstream attention quite quickly. Not essential, but good for cleaning the house. New Numbers - Hinterlands
A big ol' indie rock co-lab-o, most notably two of the guys from The Jealous Girlfriends along with members of Sam Champion and The Comas. Sound-wise, its pretty close to the Girlfriends but stands on its own. So far its just an EP, but its free so you have no excuse. Fleet Foxes - Blue Spotted Tail
Robin Pecknold took a break from doing his solo thing (White Antelope) and debuted a new song for the BBC while at Glastonbury. Its exactly what you think it is, so if you're a fan, you'll already love it. No definite word on a new full yet, but with as much as Pecknold is dumping on his MySpace, there really is no lag to forget them. Slaraffenland - Meet and Greet
I'm starting to think I need to learn a few new languages. This one is Danish and if I just slur something out, its bound to come close. Its not a huge country, so the odds of me running into someone to correct me is slim. Anyway, this is the sophomore release from the five piece. Pitchfork are big fans, so they're off to a good start. What's kind of refreshing about Meet and Greet is that it doesn't hit you in the face, but sneaks up behind you and infiltrates your ears. There is no big chorus, which is why i'm surprised that i've found myself singing it from time to time. Just a cool song, anyway. Do it.
Those Darlins - Red Light Love
From Murfreesboro, TN, the gals have been hard workin' nearly nonstop for the past few years and its finally paying off. They do the Punk Grrrl Americana thing, and while i'm personally not totally sold, a lot of others are. You can grab the self-titled debut now.
Don Diabo vs. The Roots - The Seed 3.0 Don Diablo - Song For MJ (Remember The Time)
It was a great week for DJ-Dude Don Diablo. His remix of The Roots' "The Seed 2.0" was already gaining a ton of buzz. The after the King of Pop passes, Diablo quickly threw down a fantastic remix of Jackson's Dangerous track, Remember The Time, and it quickly became the number one blogged song. Needless to say, you can grab either of these, for free, almost anywhere. A. A. Bondy - When The Devil's Loose
Bondy is back with this somewhat haunting, swampy song from his forthcoming disc of the same name. A. A. traveled down to Mississippi where he gathered a band (something he hadn't done with his solo project previously) to find the feel that invokes "Devil." You can pick up your own copy on Sept. 1. Summer Cats - Hey You, Its Me (Oh My)
Proof that Australia can play the pop game as well as anybody, Summer Catsdrop their bright-n-shiny set of tunes, Songs For Tuesdays, on July 14.
Holy Ghost! - I Will Come Back
Previously, this duo was strickly in the remix game - firing on all cylinders for bands like MGMT & Phoenix - but now they're showing that they too can write. The video for this track is an homage to New Order's '83 video "Confusion." Its been a good week for dance numbers.
Megafaun - Kaufman's Ballad
More CSN than anything I've heard yet, which is saying something. They're new disc Gather, Form, & Fly is getting some big attention from all over and you'll be able to catch the trio on tour well into August.
Radical Sons - I'm So Sick of the 21st Century
I feel sorry for these guys. if they're already sick of this century, its gonna be a lonely existence. You couldn't tell it from the music though. Always nice to mask your anger behind some bright guitar, pounding drums, and full band background vocals. I'd pick up their Throwing Knives EP while you're waiting for the next Strokes release.
Another week gone, but its not a sad event. Another one has already started. (cheeeeeeese). Okay, if ya like what you heard, make sure to tell a friend as well as join us on our Facebook page where other like-minded obsessives gather. The Weekly Feed is produced by Kyle Meredith (that's me) and Todd Smith at MixWorks Studio in Louisville, KY and is distributed by WFPK and Louisville Public Media.
