Recently, at the Louisville Palace we were treated to a wonderful evening of music by Robert Plant, Alison Krauss & T-Bone Burnett. They performed many songs off the new album Raising Sand and many covers of Led Zeppelin tunes.
Duke: There were 2 standout sections for me. First was Alison Krauss's..."Trampled Rose" from Raising Sand ( I fell in love with her voice all over again) and "Down to the River to Pray"...The second was "Please Read The Letter"...."Battle of Evermore" into the Everly brothers cover"Gone Gone Gone". Although Alison commanded the stage with her stellar talent and ability, she seemed a bit shy and withdrawn and it seemed like Robert would try to stay in the background to keep the focus on the two of them. I believe he was doing that because the crowd seemed to be a Zeppelin leaning audience. Despite a few sound problems with the mix, overall I loved the show.
Laura: One of my favorite songs of the night was "29 Palms" from a solo release of Robert's called Fate of Nations. Alison's voice throughout was spectacular and strong and soaring. Robert was so charismatic and a rock star even when singing bluegrass. His version of the Townes Van Zandt song "Nothing" was also a highlight. My only complaint was with the sound mix at times. Not enough volume on Robert's voice or for Buddy Miller's guitar. At one point, Alison and guitarist/fiddler Stuart Duncan did a duet and his guitar was in the monitor only! A bit frustrating and esp. for Alison. She seemed to be somewhat perturbed with her monitor mix throughout. Other than those minor issues, it really was a fantastic show and I'm so glad I got to see this historic performance.
