WFPK & Cherryholmes to Celebrate Country Gentlemen’s 80th Birthday

May 3, 2010: 91.9 WFPK is celebrating Sunday Bluegrass host Berk Bryant’s 80th Birthday on Sunday, June 6th 8pm (7pm doors) at The Vernon Club. “The shortest, fastest and bestest three hours in radio” will broadcast live with performances from Skaggs Family Recording Artists The Cherryholmes, Blue River and Bluegrass 101.Berk Bryant represents the true spirit of public radio. The Country Gentlemen, as he is known on air and in Bluegrass circles, has been the volunteer host of Sunday Bluegrass since 1989, longer than anyone on record. He launched the concept in the mid-fifties at WWOD in Lynchburg, VA. At that time it was known as “Country Gentlemen Time”, after the Chet Atkins tune of the same name. Off air, Bryant also served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1982, with a brief stint at GE. In addition to his radio show, Berk is a much loved Bluegrass Festival emcee at events in Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky.Sunday Bluegrass airs every Sunday from 8pm to 11pm on WFPK. To quote Berk, Sunday Bluegrass, “exudes the love of the traditional bluegrass and country music. Old time country music at it’s finest.”Tickets for Berk’s Birthday Bash on Sunday, June 6th at 8pm are free and on a first-come basis, limit two per person.
