UPDATE: Police say ‘suspicious device’ near Metro Hall downtown is safe to remove, shelter in place order to end

An LMPD cruiser sits outside the LMPD Downtown Area Patrol building.

This story was updated at 1:25 p.m.

Louisville Metro Police Chief Erika Shields says investigators have deemed a “suspicious device” found downtown this morning safe to remove.

Officials will test the device at another location. Police found the device, originally described as a “suspicious package,” around 9 a.m. Friday near Fifth Street, between Market and Jefferson streets. The location is near Metro Hall.

Police closed off several blocks to the public and asked people who live or work in the area to shelter in place. Shields told reporters at a briefing just before 1 p.m. that the order will end when the device is removed.

The FBI is taking over the investigation.

During the initial search, police deployed robots in the area. A team of officers, including some in hazmat and SWAT gear, also canvassed the area.
