Ja'Nel Johnson has been hired as WFPL News' community health reporter, a new position that will expand the organization's coverage of health and healthcare issues.
Johnson comes to Louisville from KVNO News in Omaha, Neb., where she's been the news director for the last 16 months. She also serves as executive producer of "The Omaha News," a student-produced television show on the Omaha PBS affiliate.
Johnson, a Gary, Ind., native, has a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University and has also written for newspapers, including the Northwest Indiana Times and the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Her role is part of the year-long Next Louisville: Community Health project, a collaboration between WFPL News, Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and the Community Foundation of Louisville.
Last year, the Next Louisville project focused on education.
