Bad news first. Gabe Bullard, WFPL's director of news and editorial strategy, is leaving.
The good news. It's only for 10 months, and he'll spend that time as a Nieman Fellow—a prestigious fellowship awarded to a select few journalists who get to study their field at Harvard University.
The Nieman Fellow's 2014-15 class was announced Wednesday. It includes 24 journalists representing The Wall Street Journal, NPR's Morning Edition, The Washington Post and more. (Here's a full list.)
And Gabe.
As a Nieman Fellow, Gabe will "study the changing perceptions of American history in politics and culture," according to Nieman's announcement.
"I'm thrilled to be part of the Nieman program and this talented class of journalists," Gabe said. "I'm very interested in how we see ourselves and our past, and I look forward to bringing what I learn back to Louisville Public Media."
Past Nieman Fellows include The New Yorker's Susan Orlean, The Washington Post's Eugene Robinson, NPR's Dina Temple-Raston and David Hawpe, former editor of The Courier-Journal.
The fellowship runs an academic year, so Gabe will start his hiatus from WFPL and Louisville Public Media sometime in August.
