Noise and Notes: The Decadent and Depraved Politics of Derby Weekend

By now we know who won the 139th Kentucky Derby, but there are still questions about other political horse races. At this point Republican Mitch McConnell does have one official opponent—Owensboro Democrat Ed Marksberry—who is a little known contender in the 2014 U.S. Senate race.Reports are that Democratic Secretary of State is inching towards a decision, but that doesn't mean she's running. In Louisville's mayoral race next year, Democratic Mayor Greg Fischer announced his re-election, and at least one challenger has stepped forward from the Occupy Louisville movement. And let’s not forget in this week of partying and hoopla news of another case of alleged racial discrimination at Fourth Street Live involving former UofL basketball star Jason Osborne this week. Several black elected officials showed up to support Osborne at his arraignment, but some questioned why African-Americans would patronize the entertainment district.Freelance journalist Jonathan Meador and radio host Brandon Lawrence dropped by to discuss those issues along with the decadent, depraved and increasingly corporate Derby festivities.
