A new program called Youth Engaging Compassion is encouraging Louisville region public and private school students to be more...well...compassionate.
Educators announced the program Thursday ahead of the Dalai Lama’s visit later this year.Jefferson County Public Schools and the Archdiocese of Louisville are partners in Youth Engaging Compassion along with other private schools. The program allows students to share projects and ideas on the web.Further, the program provides a checklist that matches local organizations with volunteers, says Robin Burke, co-chair of the project’s committee.“It’s everything. It’s from random acts of kindness to different ways of approaching difficulties in the classroom. It’s a real cultural shift and its really up to the teachers and the kids themselves to do it differently," she says.More than 2,000 students will hear the Dalai Lama speak when he comes to Louisville in May. Burke says guidelines for students will be announced the first week of March.
