Final Week to Apply for JCPS School Choices

Jefferson County families have one week to apply for their top public school choices for next school year and the district is opening some offices with extended hours this week to help complete the process.“Parents that will be able to get their applications in by the Jan. 11 deadline will have a much greater opportunity to get the choices that they want and so that’s why we encourage parents to meet that deadline and not put it off any longer than they need to,” said JCPS spokesman Ben Jackey. There are 15 sites where parents who need help applying can visit and three are opening this week with extended hours. The application process has been moved entirely online for the first time. This is also the first year parents with students entering kindergarten will be allowed to apply for the elementary school of their choice. Under the district’s student assignment plan, there are fewer school choices available to parents, though the district will bus fewer students around the district. Jackey says this will allow JCPS to adjust to the district’s new student assignment plan and it gives parents more time to adjust to their new school. “We believe its going to be in April which will actually be sooner than we’ve had in the past. We believe that this process will be a little bit more expedient because its being done by computer.” Applications will still be accepted after the deadline.
