First Shipment in Kentucky-India Coal Deal Still Delayed

That deal to export Kentucky coal to Indiastill hasn't been scheduled. The deal was announced in August—an agreement to send up to nine million tons of Appalachian coal to India every year for 25 years. The first shipment was supposed to leave the U.S. in September, but the company responsible for facilitating the transportation says it still hasn’t been scheduled.A spokesman for River Trading Company says the main factor in the delay is weak market conditions overseas, but the coal scandal currently underway in India and the major Indian holiday of Diwali also played a part. The deal is estimated to be worth $7 billion over the 25-year contract, and was previously hailed by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and the coal industry as welcome news for the state’s coal exports.
