Cyclist Hit on Bardstown Road, Days Before Road is Closed to Encourage Cycling

A bicyclist was hit by a car this morning on Bardstown Road, only days before the road is scheduled to be shut down for a few hours to encourage walking and cycling.Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell confirmed that the cyclist and the driver of the vehicle were heading north on Bardstown Road, when the driver turned right into the Speedway gas station near Grinstead and struck the cyclist. The cyclist was taken to Audobon Hospital, which he said means the injuries aren't life-threatening.It's ironic that this happened less than a week before Louisville's first CycLOUviais scheduled. On Sunday, Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue from Dundee to Broadway are scheduled to be closed to traffic from 2 to 6pm. People are encouraged to walk, bike, skate, dance, etc.The event is based on Ciclovia, which began in Bogota, Colombia. There's money coming in from Metro Government and Councilman Tom Owen, but there's also a Kickstarter campaign that's close to being funded, but isn't quite there yet.
