Churchill Downs officials have announced its $9 million renovation project to create "The Mansion" and will soon offer its preferred guests a chance to enjoy races in luxury. This is how significant the new space will be: The Mansion is pushing the Gold Room--which serves certain VIPs--down to floor two. But, given the Gold Room is expanding as well it’s not such a bad thing. In all, four projects are included in the renovation with all but the Mansion scheduled for completion later this year. The projects include moving the media center to a spot near Churchill’s Gate 1 entrance and razing the Paddock Pavilion to create more open space for guests. The Mansion will offer over 320 individuals a chance to relax in luxury. Amenities include personal service, a private wine cellar and rooms with titles like the Library and the Living Room, which offer panoramic views and premium seating. The space is located on the 6th floor of the Clubhouse overlooking the finishing line. The Mansion will be invitation only to the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, and is expected to be complete by the 139th annual races. The new media center is scheduled to be completed before the Fall meet beginning Oct. 28. The expanded Gold Room is expected to be open in August and will replace the space previously utilized as the Champions Lounge. There will be additional seating and updated amenities.Nearly $150 million has been invested in Churchill Downs over the last decade. The most recent development included the purchase and installation of a permanent lighting system for $4 million, which was completed in 2010.
