The Kentucky General Assembly will use $19,000 of public money to pay for legal fees stemming from state redistricting. Louisville attorney Sheryl Snyder represented the state Legislative Research Commission earlier this year when some lawmakers challenged the constitutionality of Kentucky’s redistricting plan. House Speaker Greg Stumbo says the $19,000 bill for those services was sent by e-mail Wednesday night. “Senator Williams and I authorized that payment, as we authorized the retention of the attorney according to the accepted rules and practices of the Legislative Research Commission,” Stumbo said. The state Supreme Court ultimately threw out the redrawn legislative boundaries, which are required every 10 years to account for population changes. The General Assembly will take up the issue again early next year. Meanwhile, the lawmakers who filed suit have said they do not plan to use public funds to cover their legal fees.
