U of L Recognized for Local Food Efforts

A national organization is recognizing the University of Louisville for increasing the amount of local food that’s served on campus.U of L is one of 15 colleges and universities cited this month by the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. The group is a network of nearly 700 higher education institutions, all of which have committed to increase research and education on climate change.On its website, the Presidents’ Climate Commitment praises U of L for sourcing 24 percent of the food served on campus from local sources. That’s an increase of 9 percentage points over the past four years. The university uses food service vendor Sodexho, which is required in its contract with the school to serve a percentage of locally grown and produced food.“Louisville’s work in this area is giving campuses across the country food for thought,” said Anthony Cortese, president of Second Nature, a group that supports the Presidents’ Climate Commitment. “Its efforts demonstrate how basic changes in operations can have a far-reaching impact on our health, economy and the environment.”U of L also works with Metro Government’s Louisville Farm to Table Project.
