Fish and Wildlife Seeks Donated Christmas Trees to Replace Fish Habitat

For those who want their Christmas trees to become more than mulch, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for trees to submerge in lakes. As the state’s lakes age, there’s a need to replace the woody habitat that provides cover for fish. The sunken trees provide protective cover for all kinds of fish, plus algae can grow on it and provide food for aquatic organisms. Any donated trees will be placed in the state’s 17 major reservoirs, smaller state-owned lakes and smaller Fishing in Neighborhoods lakes. There are tree drop-off locations all over the state, but the closest one to Louisville is in Shelbyville.
