Yarmuth Holds Job Fair to Boost Hiring Among Veterans

Congressman John Yarmuth will hold ajob fair today to match unemployed veterans with businesses that are hiring.Yarmuth says he’s holding the job fair because the unemployment rate among veterans is significantly higher than the general population, despite many valuable skills.“Veterans make very appealing employees because they obviously have the ability to work together with others, they are dedicated, they’re focused,” he said. “So we started reaching out to employers in the community who might be willing to participate and we’ve actually exceeded our expectations.”There will be more than 40 area employers at the fair, including representatives from UPS, Zappos, Humana, Kroger and Louisville Metro Fire and Police. Together, all the employers are looking to fill 500 jobs.Yarmuth says there besides employers who are hiring, there will be other services.“There are going to be counselors there who will help them refine their job-searching skills, work with them on interview skills and provide other resources for them to find work if none of those jobs happen to be matches,” he said.There will also be representatives from the Small Business Administration to offer advice on starting a business. Non-veterans are welcome.The job fair is from 10am to 2pm today at the Canaan Christian Church at 2840 Hikes Lane in Louisville.
