U.S. Secretary of Education Visits Louisville Next Week

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Louisville next week as a keynote speaker at the 38th National Conference for Middle School Educators.Duncan will be joined by Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday. Duncan's speech will focus on federal education policy and goals. Holliday will address state issues, including changing accountability measures and next-generation learning.The education officials will also be joined by actor Henry Winkler, who has written a number of children's books about dyslexia.“He’s talking about his struggles as a student who had dyslexia and it wasn’t actually officially noted that he had that until he was an adult. And I’ve heard him speak, he has a fabulous story to tell,” said April Tibbles with the Association of Middle Level Education, which is hosts the conference.Around 5,000 educators are expected to attend the three-day conference at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Educators will have hundreds of sessions to choose from that help develop strategies and goals in classroom. There are new topics to discuss every year, said Tibbles.“There’s an additional increase on best use of technology for education purposes, increased sessions on cyber bullying, bullying issues in the classroom, common core standards is a newer thing. So content wise we absolutely have a fresh new conference every year,” she said.
