Beshear Wants Terror Suspects Out of Kentucky

A day after his Republican opponent charged he lacked the courage to do so, Democratic Governor Steve Beshear has issued a statement calling for the two Iraqi nationals facing terrorism charges to be sent out of Kentucky.On Wednesday, state Senate President David Williams challenged Beshear and House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, to join him and U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky,, who initially demanded Waad Ramadan Alwan and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi be sent to the controversial military base to be tried as enemy combatants.The two arrested in Bowling Green last month, accused of attempting to provide cash and weapons to al Qaida in Iraq.Stumbo quickly responded, saying he supported the idea, but the governor stopped short of making the request and said he was concerned about the safety and risk to people in the commonwealth, wherever the terror suspects are held and however they are tried.Beshear clarified his earlier comments Thursday evening."Regarding the men in Bowling Green who are facing terror charges, I am fine with the federal government sending them to Guantanamo Bay," he said in statement. "My main concern is to get them out of Kentucky.”The Williams campaign criticized Beshear's statement, calling it a "languid reaction."
