Preservation Louisville revealed their annual top ten lists Thursday and announced the removal of the Whiskey Row buildings from 105-119 W. Main St from the endangered buildings list.
Executive Director Marianne Zickuhr says Whiskey Row has been an important achievement for the organization.“Knowing that we had both entities the preservation successes list and the endangered list that had entries from whiskey row it was obviously a controversial time," she says "but we’re standing here full of smiles and wonderful, wonderful happiness because of what a great deal has been reached between the developer and the city.”The endangered list had a large X marking out Whiskey Row, the former number one most endangered building; and the Whiskey Row Lofts are listed as the number one success.Zickuhr says she is extremely proud of the work between the city and developers to save the buildings.“I think Mayor Fischer made a great stand by coming forward and really pushing for creative, out of the box thinking in order to find a resolution to the issue here on whiskey row," Zickuhr says "and seeing how well he protected our civic assets, I feel really proud to be a Louisvillian standing here today.”Preservation Louisville implemented the annual top ten successes list in 2008 as a way to celebrate historical preservation projects. Zickuhr says the list has been a major attention getter in the community and she hopes it continues to motivate people to take action in their own neighborhoods.
