LIHEAP Pre-Registration Begins For Disabled And Elderly

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, begins next month. But disabled and elderly residents can apply for assistance starting Wednesday.Pre-registration is available for low-income Louisvillians who are also disabled or elderly and receiving certain benefits such as Social Security. Community Action Partnership staff will visit various community centers in the next few weeks to take the early applications. CAP spokesperson Debbie Belt says early and standard registrations have increased in the last two years."Last year we had somewhere around 2,800 people in the month of October," she says. "Each site differs. Some are a little bit different than others. Some, we may see 100 people and some maybe 50 people."Standard LIHEAP applications will be taken at the end of this month at CAP offices. They may obtain an appointment to apply for LIHEAP from October 27-29, 2010 at the Central CAP Office located at the Urban Government Center, 810 Barret Avenue between 8 am – 4:30 pm.   All three CAP offices will begin taking appointments on November 1 st between 8 am – 1 pm, except for November 2 nd due to being closed for Election Day. Individuals who are unable to apply for this program in person may send a representative on their behalf. Simply provide the representative with a hand-written note, dated and signed from the applicant, giving them permission to handle their application for services. The representative will also need to provide their photo ID matching the name specified on the applicant’s note, along with the applicant’s photo ID, as well as the required documentation above that is required to apply for the services/programs.
