Hollowell Files For Special Election

Sixth District Metro Councilman Deonte Hollowell has filed to run in the special election that will be held for his seat this November. Hollowell is the first candidate to file to run for the seat, which was previously held by the late George Unseld. The council appointed Hollowell last month, making the U of L professor the first independent to serve on the body. He says the decision to seek election to the seat came easily."There's no Democratic or Republican way to do this job and so I remain independent because I really believe that I can go in with a fresh mind without being clouded by party politics," he says. Both major parties may choose candidates to run in the special election as well. The Democratic Party will do so Thursday, and the GOP is expected to nominate someone soon. The 6th district includes parts of Old Louisville and the California and Russell neighborhoods, among others. Hollowell says he's putting together a campaign to reach out to the diverse constituency."I intend on making each individual neighborhood a priority and I plan on having teams of volunteers all over the place," he says. "I look forward to whatever it is I can do to hear what the constituents have to say and needs that are pressing in each neighborhood."Hollowell says convincing those constituents to step away from their party affiliation will be a challenge in the election."I think people have assumed that the major parties have something that people need and I tend to disagree. I think that Metro Council does not necessarily need the major parties to be represented because I honestly don't feel like there's a need for partisanship in Metro Council," he says.
